Switching to Reserve from Tally, Zoho Books, or QuickBooks

If you're considering a switch

Tally, Zoho Books, and QuickBooks are all capable tools — millions of Indian businesses run on them. If you're reading this, you're probably weighing a switch for one of a few reasons: you want your books to work without an internet connection, you want your financial data to live on your own machine instead of someone else's cloud, or you've outgrown a tool that wasn't built around India's GST rules from day one.

This page is here to answer the practical question honestly: what actually happens when you switch to Reserve, what carries over automatically, and what you'll need to set up by hand.

What's automated today

If you're coming from an older version of Reserve itself (v2.x), the migration is automatic — Reserve detects and imports your existing database on first launch, no manual work required. Bank statements also import directly via CSV, with presets for major Indian banks.

What's not automated yet — stated plainly

There is currently no one-click import tool for Tally, Zoho Books, or QuickBooks data.If that's what you were hoping to hear, we'd rather tell you now than have you discover it after downloading. Direct import from other billing platforms is on our roadmap, not shipped today.

In practice, switching means setting up your company profile, client and vendor list, and product/service catalogue fresh in Reserve, then starting to invoice from your current date forward. For most small businesses this is a focused afternoon, not a data-entry project — especially since you likely aren't re-entering every historical transaction, just your current masters (clients, GST-registered vendors, products) and opening balances.

If you have a large client or product list already in a spreadsheet, get in touch — support@getreserveapp.in— and we'll tell you honestly whether we can help speed that part up for your specific case.

Why offline-first changes the calculation

Tally runs locally too, which is part of why it has stayed the default choice for so many Indian businesses — but its interface and reporting predate modern GST filing by years. Zoho Books and QuickBooks are cloud-native, which means your invoices, client data, and financial history sit on a third party's servers, and the app stops working the moment your internet does.

Reserve was built the opposite way: your database lives on your machine, encrypted with AES-256-GCM, and the app works fully offline — creating invoices, generating GST reports, everything — with internet only needed for license activation and optional multi-device sync. No subscription-gated feature walls, no uptime dependency on someone else's servers, no uploading your customer list to a cloud you don't control.

What you keep either way

  • Your GST registration, HSN/SAC codes, and tax rates — you set these up once in Reserve, same as any new tool
  • Your client and vendor relationships — re-entered once, then permanent
  • Your invoice numbering — Reserve lets you set a starting number and prefix, so your sequence continues cleanly
  • Historical filings — nothing about your past GSTR filings changes; Reserve only affects invoices you raise going forward

See it before you commit. Reserve offers a 14-day free trial with every feature unlocked — no credit card required. Download Reserve and set up your first company in one sitting.

The honest verdict

If a one-click migration tool from Tally, Zoho Books, or QuickBooks is a hard requirement for you today, Reserve isn't there yet — and we'd rather you know that going in. If you're open to a focused setup session in exchange for genuinely offline, encrypted, desktop-first GST billing going forward, Reserve is built for exactly that trade.
